A 20-year-old Nigerian student based in the United Kingdom, Khaleed Oladipo, has died after being stabbed in Leicester, police have confirmed.
Oladipo, a cyber security student at De Montfort University (DMU), was attacked on Tuesday evening on Oxford Street, close to the university campus. He sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest and later died in hospital despite emergency treatment.
Leicestershire Police said they were called shortly after 5:00pm GMT following reports that a man had collapsed near the junction of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane. Four ambulances and an air ambulance were deployed to the scene, and the victim was rushed to hospital, where he sadly passed away a short time later.
An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Oladipo, who was originally from London but living in Leicester, was in his second year at DMU. A post-mortem examination confirmed that his death was caused by a stab wound to the chest.
Following the incident, several roads in the city centre were closed, including Infirmary Road, Oxford Street, Infirmary Square, Carlton Street, York Road, Lower Brown Street, The Gateway, and Gosling Street.
In a tribute, Oladipo’s family described him as an “extremely loved” son and thanked members of the public who attempted to help him, as well as the ambulance service and hospital staff.
They said he was a passionate football fan and a lifelong Arsenal supporter, adding that they believe he was on his way home to watch his team play when the attack occurred.
“Khaleed was a good boy who loved his family,” the family said. “We were so proud of him and all he was achieving. Football was one of his greatest passions—he had played since the age of four.”
