Members of the Pronto Veterans Association, a group of retired Nigerian Army officers, have called on citizens across the country to embrace and uphold the values of discipline, integrity, selflessness and unwavering patriotism exemplified by the late General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, as Nigeria marks the 50th anniversary of his assassination.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the association’s chairman, Col. Saka Oyelese (retd.), said Gen. Muhammed remains a powerful symbol of leadership and national service, even decades after his untimely death in February 1976.
Gen. Muhammed, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from July 29, 1975, until his assassination on February 13, 1976, was killed when his convoy was ambushed in Lagos near the Federal Secretariat, Ikoyi, by military officers loyal to a rival commander.
The veterans described his leadership as “decisive, patriotic and deeply committed to Nigeria’s unity and progress,” noting that his short tenure had a lasting impact on governance and public service in the country.
“Fifty years on, his life and service continue to stand as a powerful reminder that leadership is a trust — anchored in sacrifice, courage and service to the people,” the statement read.
The group urged Nigerians — especially young people and current leaders — to preserve and apply the values Gen. Muhammed championed, saying this was essential to building a stronger, more just and united Nigeria.
“May the memory of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed continue to inspire present and future generations in the pursuit of national unity, integrity and progress,” the veterans said.
Although his time in office was brief, Gen. Muhammed introduced bold public service reforms, sought to restore discipline in government institutions, and set Nigeria on a clear path toward the restoration of civilian rule.
Commemorative events are ongoing across the country as the nation reflects on the contributions of one of its most iconic leaders.
