The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has firmly rejected allegations that his office imported dangerous toxic chemicals into Nigeria, describing the claim as false, misleading and politically motivated.
In a statement issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Ribadu dismissed assertions that hazardous substances were procured from Poland under his supervision. He maintained that no illegal or unauthorised chemical importation took place and that all procurement activities under his office strictly comply with Nigerian laws and international safety standards.
The controversy followed accusations by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who alleged that a toxic chemical shipment was brought into the country through official channels linked to the NSA’s office. El-Rufai had called for an investigation, claiming the substance in question posed potential health and security risks.
Responding to the allegation, Ribadu said the claims lack factual basis and are capable of creating unnecessary public panic. He stressed that matters relating to national security procurement are governed by clear regulations, oversight mechanisms and inter-agency checks.
The NSA’s office further disclosed that the matter has been referred to the State Security Service for review and necessary action. Officials indicated that appropriate steps would be taken to address what they described as misinformation.
Security analysts note that chemicals classified as hazardous are tightly regulated under both Nigerian environmental laws and international conventions. Any authorised importation of controlled substances, they say, typically requires permits from relevant regulatory bodies and monitoring by security agencies.
Political observers believe the dispute reflects rising tensions within the country’s political space, especially as alignments and rivalries continue to evolve ahead of future electoral cycles.
As of press time, no documentary evidence has been publicly presented to substantiate the allegation. The NSA’s office reiterated its commitment to transparency, national security, and adherence to due process in all operational matters.
Further official clarification is expected as investigative authorities review the claims.
