Security agencies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have begun deploying increased personnel across the territory ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday February 21 2026, authorities say. The operation involves a coordinated effort by the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Air Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) among others to ensure a peaceful electoral process and safeguard voters.
The FCT Police Command announced the deployment in a statement on Tuesday saying officers have been mobilised to provide security presence at all polling units and collation centres across the territory in line with its comprehensive operational order to protect the rights of citizens and deter any unlawful activities.
Commissioner of Police Miller G. Dantawaye directed all personnel involved to uphold the highest professional standards and be impartial in their conduct while also guaranteeing adequate coverage of strategic locations. Residents have been urged to remain calm law‑abiding and fully exercise their civic duties without fear as they head to the polls.
As part of the security measures imposed for the election day the command said there will be a restriction of movement from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on February 21, 2026 with exceptions only for essential service providers accredited election officials and emergency response teams. The order aims to reduce traffic and prevent disruptions that could jeopardise the peaceful conduct of the polls.
Authorities emphasised that the deployment is designed to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders to provide a credible free and fair election in the FCT. Citizens have been encouraged to report suspicious activities promptly to the security agencies while they carry out their duties to protect lives and property.
The operation underscores the commitment of the security architecture in the Federal Capital Territory to maintain public order and ensure that the Area Council elections proceed smoothly and securely across all wards and polling units.
