The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed 18 warehouses in Bida after uncovering large quantities of expired food and beverage products valued at over ₦100 million, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.
The operation was carried out by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate following credible intelligence about illegal storage of consumables that had passed their expiry dates. Items seized included about 80,000 packets of expired non‑alcoholic drinks 5,000 packets of dairy milk 16,000 bottles of water 28 cartons of pasta and assorted candies that were already packaged for distribution.
According to the agency’s statement, several warehouse managers were arrested and interrogated during the raid. Preliminary investigations linked the storage facilities to a company identified as BY Ventures, prompting officials to extend the operation to the company’s supermarkets in Minna, where additional expired food items and suspected counterfeit cooking oil were discovered.
supermarkets were subsequently sealed and the Managing Director, Yusuf Nadabo, was invited for further questioning. He reportedly admitted ownership of the products under investigation. NAFDAC said inquiries are ongoing and that regulatory sanctions will be applied once the process is complete to deter traders from stocking and distributing unsafe food items.
The agency emphasised that eradicating expired and unsafe food products from the supply chain is vital to protecting public health and consumer safety, especially during high‑demand periods.
