Abuja Nigeria – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured victory in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election held on Saturday February 21 2026, with Christopher Zakka Maikalangu declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after collation of votes from across the council area.
INEC officials announced on Sunday morning that Maikalangu, the incumbent AMAC chairman, scored the highest number of votes in the contest, returning him to office for another term. In the final tally, Maikalangu polled 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid ballots, far ahead of his closest rivals and ensuring a clear majority.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate followed with 12,109 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate scored 3,398 votes, according to the collation officer’s announcement. A total of 2,336 votes were rejected across the council area.
Maikalangu’s victory comes as part of a broader set of Area Council elections across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where results are continuing to be collated and announced for the other five councils. Observers noted that voter turnout was relatively low in some parts of the territory but that the polls generally took place peacefully and with minimal disruption.
Following the declaration, supporters of the APC candidate celebrated the outcome, describing it as a reaffirmation of confidence in his leadership and his record of service in the council. Party agents commended the electoral process and called on all stakeholders to respect the result.
With the AMAC chairmanship settled, attention now turns to other area councils where results are still being finalised and collated by INEC officials.
