Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, on Monday night undertook an emergency visit to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos after a fire broke out at Terminal 1 of the airport, multiple news outlets report.
The fire, which erupted on Monday afternoon, affected parts of Terminal 1 and prompted an immediate response from emergency teams including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) fire service and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. FAAN said the outbreak led to temporary disruptions to airport operations with some flights diverted and evacuations carried out as firefighters contained the blaze.
Keyamo travelled from Abuja and arrived at MMIA at about 11:50 p.m. to join the Managing Director of FAAN Olubunmi Kuku and other officials on site as response efforts continued. He commended the swift action of emergency responders and said their coordinated efforts were vital in safeguarding lives and limiting the impact of the fire.
The minister also directed FAAN management and relevant aviation agencies to reconvene early Tuesday morning for a joint inspection of the affected terminal to assess the extent of the damage and guide recovery work. Keyamo stressed the Federal Government’s commitment to passenger safety, preservation of critical aviation infrastructure and rapid restoration of normal airport operations.
Authorities say no fatalities were recorded and that the fire has since been brought under control, with flight operations resuming under temporary arrangements as safety assessments continue.
