The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position at the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, multiple sources report.

Senior government officials say the resignation was tendered on Monday February 23, 2026, after the president asked Egbetokun to step aside during discussions about the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. The development marks a major shake‑up in the nation’s top police leadership.

Though no formal statement has been issued by the presidency as of press time, insiders indicate that Assistant Inspector‑General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu, who currently oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos, is being lined up to succeed Egbetokun as the next IGP.
