President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the new Inspector‑General of Police (IGP) following the resignation of IGP Kayode Egbetokun, presidency sources and security officials say.

The leadership change came after Egbetokun was asked to step down by President Tinubu during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, according to senior government sources. Egbetokun tendered his resignation and is expected to hand over to Disu, who has been serving as an Assistant Inspector‑General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

NgTunji Disu is a career police officer with more than three decades of service, having risen through several senior command roles, including leadership of the Intelligence Response Team and Rapid Response Squad, and recent assignment at the Force CID Annex. His appointment marks a major transition in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, with a formal handover ceremony expected at police headquarters in Abuja once official procedures are completed.

Egbetokun was appointed the 22nd Inspector‑General of Police by President Tinubu in June 2023, an appointment later ratified by the Nigeria Police Council. His tenure had attracted public debate in recent months amid broader discussions about police leadership and security performance nationwide.

Tinubu’s decision to install Disu as his successor reflects a broader shake‑up within Nigeria’s security architecture, as the government aims to strengthen internal security institutions and improve policing effectiveness across the country.
