A labourer working with the Ogun State Government, Oluwaseyi Adeoye, has been shot dead by a military operative during a demolition exercise at Orile-Imo along the Sagamu–Abeokuta Expressway, multiple news reports say. The incident has triggered shock and condemnation from community members and state officials.
The tragedy occurred on Monday February 23 2026, when officials and labourers from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development went to enforce a demolition order against illegal structures at a property owned by Ganic Company in the Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of the state.
Eyewitnesses said tension escalated when the demolition team arrived at the site and encountered soldiers already positioned there. As the team prepared to begin work, a disagreement reportedly broke out between the enforcement crew and the servicemen, leading to an exchange that quickly degenerated into violence.
According to workers present, one of the soldiers opened fire during the clash, striking Adeoye who died at the scene before help could arrive. The victim’s body was taken to the State General Hospital, Ijaiye in Abeokuta, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, officials confirmed.
Residents and colleagues described Adeoye as a hardworking labourer who was assisting the state government in its urban planning mission, with some questioning why military personnel were present at a civil enforcement exercise. Community leaders and civic groups have called for a thorough investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the shooting and to ensure accountability for the loss of life.
The Ogun State Police Command has acknowledged the incident and said a probe is ongoing to identify the personnel involved and establish the facts. A police spokesperson urged the public to remain calm while the investigation continues.
Officials from the ministry also expressed sorrow over the death and pledged to support efforts to clarify what happened in the clash. They urged security agencies to improve coordination during joint operations to avoid further fatalities.
