The Coroner’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrate Court has adjourned proceedings to April 14, 2026 for the formal commencement of an inquest into the death of 21-month-old Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, the late son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege, court records show.
Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji made the order on Wednesday February 25, 2026, when the matter first came before the court. The inquiry will seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death on January 7 2026, after he underwent medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos following treatment for a worsening illness.
The coroner adjourned the case to allow all parties involved to prepare for the inquest, directing them to file witness statements ahead of the next sitting. The hearing will explore evidence on medical care provided to the child including diagnostic procedures the family said were carried out before his sudden death.
In a preliminary session lawyers for the family, the Attorney-General of Lagos State and representatives of the healthcare facilities attended. The court also noted that investigations are proceeding following a request from the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, supported by the Lagos State Government as a bereaved party.
The inquest represents a formal legal effort to establish the cause and circumstances of the young boy’s passing, a matter that has drawn national attention since his death and prompted allegations of medical negligence from his parents.
