Olatunji Ridwan Disu has officially assumed duty as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), pledging to lead the service with professionalism accountability and a renewed commitment to public trust, multiple news outlets report.

Disu took over from Kayode Egbetokun at a ceremony held on Wednesday February 25, 2026 at the Force Headquarters in Abuja following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The event included the decoration of Disu with his new rank at the State House in the nation’s capital.

In his inaugural address the acting IGP described the “days of impunity” within the police as over and said his leadership will be built on professionalism modernisation and accountability. He told senior officers and personnel that the badge symbolises public trust, adding that officers will be expected to act with integrity compassion and courage in service to the country.

Disu highlighted plans to strengthen internal oversight mechanisms improve disciplinary processes and integrate modern policing tools such as forensic investigation and intelligence-led operations to confront security challenges more effectively. He also pledged to improve welfare and working conditions for officers to boost morale and performance.

The acting IGP emphasised the importance of community partnership saying effective policing requires cooperation with citizens to report crime and help build trust between communities and law enforcement. His reform agenda aims to restore public confidence in the police and make the force more responsive and transparent.

President Tinubu, who presided over the handover, urged Disu to lead with discipline and fairness and to rebuild trust in the police while confronting banditry terrorism and other security threats facing the nation.

Disu’s appointment comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with complex internal security issues and expectations are high for a more accountable and people-oriented police force.
