The Kogi State Government says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s push for the establishment of state police in Nigeria will be a generational reform that could transform the country’s security architecture, state officials announced on Thursday.

In a statement signed by Kingsley Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo commended President Tinubu for reaffirming his commitment to decentralise policing during a recent high‑level meeting with state governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The Kogi government said the president’s position was timely as the National Assembly continues to deliberate on the constitutional and legislative framework required to operationalise the reform.

Tinubu has repeatedly stressed the need for state police to confront evolving security challenges in Nigeria. The initiative would empower state governments to establish their own policing units with community‑based responses to insecurity, improve intelligence gathering efforts and strengthen grassroots security.

According to the Kogi statement, the government fully aligns with the president’s agenda and is ready to cooperate with all relevant authorities to make the establishment of state police a reality. The move was described as “a bold and strategic step toward long‑term national stability”.

The statement added that sustained collaboration between federal and state authorities will not only help address immediate security threats but will also lay the foundation for enduring peace safety and development across the country.
