Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, credible news outlets report.
Fintiri announced his defection on Friday February 27, 2026, in a statement signed by his Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Humwashi Wonosikou, saying the decision was taken in the overall interest of Adamawa State and its development. The statement explained that the governor and some members of his political team had submitted their resignations from the PDP and joined the APC after careful consideration.
The governor said joining the APC will fast-track development and strengthen cooperation between the state and the Federal Government. He urged Adamawa residents to support the transition and embrace unity and peace as the state charts a new political course. “We are moving with a view to ensuring continued peace and progress in Adamawa State,” the statement said.
The defection is expected to alter the political equation in Adamawa State where Fintiri has served as governor since May 2023. It also expands the ranks of the APC, which already holds a majority of state governorships nationwide.
Political analysts say the move could have strategic implications for party alignments ahead of the 2027 polls, especially in the North-East where the PDP has been competitive in recent elections. Some APC supporters welcomed the development saying it would enhance synergy between state and federal initiatives.
However PDP leaders criticised the defection, describing it as a setback for the opposition in the region and maintaining that the party remains committed to contesting vigorously in Adamawa and nationally. They urged supporters not to be discouraged, arguing that grassroots loyalty to the PDP will endure despite defections.
