The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has declared that no power or authority can stop Muslims from practising Shariah law, rejecting external influence and asserting the right of Nigerian Muslims to follow their faith, the council said in a statement on Thursday.

In a response to a recent report by the United States Congress that recommended repealing Shariah and blasphemy laws and highlighted concerns about religious freedom in Nigeria, the council said the suggestions were inaccurate and ignored constitutional protections for freedom of religion.

The Secretary-General of the council, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, told reporters that Shariah is a comprehensive way of life for Muslims, shaping spiritual, moral, social and legal conduct. He said it is enshrined under Nigeria’s Constitution, which guarantees citizens the right to practise any religion of their choice.

Ahmad also rejected what the council described as a narrative that targeted Muslim practices, saying such viewpoints could inflame tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence among religious communities in the country. He emphasised that Shariah courts operate legally within constitutional limits and address personal matters for Muslims in states where they are recognised.

He urged Muslims to remain peaceful law-abiding citizens, intensify prayers for unity and harmony and continue living in peace with all Nigerians as they observe their faith.
