The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued an urgent safety advisory to Nigerian citizens living in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries amid the escalating military situation in the Middle East, multiple news outlets report.
In a press release on Saturday February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the evolving security environment after reported strikes by the United States and Israel on targets in Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by Iran that have affected parts of the Gulf region.
The government warned Nigerians abroad to remain extremely vigilant and avoid areas that could become potential flashpoints, including military installations government buildings and other strategic sites, the statement added. Citizens were also urged to restrict all non-essential movement within their countries of residence until the situation becomes clearer and safer.
The advisory stressed the importance of following local directives from authorities and avoiding large public gatherings or demonstrations that could attract security risks, as well as strictly observing all safety instructions issued by host country officials.
Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in Tehran and neighbouring Gulf states including Qatar Bahrain Kuwait the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have been placed on high alert to provide assistance and maintain communication with Nigerian nationals who may require support or information.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also encouraged citizens to stay informed through reliable local and international news sources and avoid misinformation that could cause panic or confusion.
In closing the statement, the government reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remain a top priority and appealed for de-escalation of hostilities through diplomatic dialogue to promote stability and global peace.
