Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti has announced that electric buses in the state will begin charging subsidised fares in the next few days, with specific ticket prices set for key routes, local news reports say.
Speaking during his monthly media chat with Abians on Friday night, Otti said the new scheme will start from March 1, 2026, under the state’s electric bus system known as the Green Shuttles. Under the arrangement commuters travelling between Umuahia and Aba will pay ₦800, while passengers on the Umuahia to Ohafia route will be charged ₦1,000, he added.
The governor noted that the decision to subsidise electric bus fares is part of his administration’s effort to ease transportation costs for residents, promote environmentally friendly mobility and support a modern, digital public transport system in Abia State. He clarified that payments will be made digitally using ATM cards, as the buses will not accept cash.
Otti also highlighted that the electric bus initiative aligns with other ongoing public service improvements in the state, including economic interventions and infrastructure development aimed at supporting residents’ daily lives.
