Former Anambra State governor and opposition figure Peter Obi has condemned the ongoing state of insecurity in Nigeria saying it is deeply troubling that politicians are preoccupied with the 2027 elections while violence continues to devastate communities across the country, political observers report.

In a recent public comment Obi said it is “profoundly disturbing” that while politicians focus on campaigning for the 2027 polls Nigerians are suffering from widespread killings and kidnappings, with reports indicating that security incidents have killed hundreds and abducted many more in the early months of 2026, he added. Although specific numbers vary across different reports and incidents Obi’s statement reflects growing alarm over the severity of insecurity that has afflicted many states and regions.

Security challenges in Nigeria have included deadly attacks by armed groups in various parts of the country and large-scale violence such as the massacre in central Nigeria’s Kwara State in early February where dozens of people were killed and others kidnapped, among other incidents linked to banditry and insurgent activity.

Obi’s remarks underscore concern among civil society and political commentators that the absence of effective, coordinated action to tackle insecurity is contributing to a sense of national unease. He called on political leaders and the federal government to prioritise the protection of lives and properties over “obsession” with electoral politics, urging immediate action to reverse the trend of violence and restore confidence among Nigerians.

The former presidential candidate’s warning adds to a chorus of voices demanding stronger government response to insecurity and more focus on the immediate welfare of citizens as the nation prepares for its next general elections.
