In a sharply worded political statement, former Transportation Minister and leader in the opposition Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has declared that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not the main obstacle to political change in Nigeria and criticised opposition parties for lacking organisation and readiness.
Amaechi made the comments during a press conference in Abuja, where he addressed leaders and members of multiple opposition parties. He said that many critics focus too much on President Tinubu and not enough on the internal weaknesses within their own ranks. According to Amaechi, the opposition’s failure to unite and mobilise effectively is the real challenge facing those who want to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 general election.
The former APC chieftain urged opposition figures to put aside infighting and develop coherent strategies that can engage ordinary voters and present credible alternatives. “If we do not organise ourselves and prepare strategically the electorate will remain uninterested and disengaged,” Amaechi said, stressing that blaming the government for every setback will not win elections.
Political analysts note that Amaechi’s remarks reflect broader frustrations within opposition ranks, where leaders from different parties have struggled to agree on a common platform and leadership structure. Recent debates over the Electoral Act 2026 and how it will shape party primaries and campaigning have highlighted those divisions, with some opposition figures warning that the current rules favour the ruling party.
The comments have drawn mixed reactions. Some opposition supporters welcomed Amaechi’s call for self-reflection within opposition groups, arguing that internal cohesion is necessary to mount a serious challenge to the ruling party. Others criticised him, saying that structural advantages held by the government still make it difficult for challengers to gain ground.
Meanwhile, the ruling party has dismissed claims that it seeks to weaken opposition parties, with President Tinubu stating recently that Nigeria has no plan to become a one-party state and that political diversity is essential for the country’s democratic progress.
The debate over opposition strategy and government performance is expected to intensify as the 2027 presidential election approaches.
