The National Police Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Mr Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) following his recent service in an acting capacity, according to multiple Nigerian news outlets.
The Council’s approval was announced on Monday March 2, 2026, at a meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, officials told reporters. The body’s endorsement marks a key step in elevating Disu to the 23rd IGP of Nigeria, pending a formal swearing-in ceremony planned for Wednesday.
The National Police Council comprises the President Vice President 36 state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission. Under Nigeria’s Police Act 2020, such approval is required before the nominee’s name is transmitted to the Senate for final confirmation unless otherwise provided for by law.
Disu had been serving as Acting IGP since late February 2026 after the resignation of his predecessor Kayode Egbetokun, and the Council’s endorsement effectively positions him as the permanent head of the Nigeria Police Force. The development represents a significant leadership transition for the nation’s principal internal security agency.
Governors and federal officials at the meeting praised Disu’s record of service and leadership potential, highlighting his experience across various command roles including tactical and investigative units. Several governors urged him to prioritise reforms aimed at enhancing professionalism community trust and operational efficiency within the force.
Following the endorsement the Federal Government said it will proceed with the next constitutional steps required to finalise Disu’s appointment, which may include legislative engagement to solidify his leadership position.
Disu’s elevation comes amid ongoing national debates on security reforms and efforts to strengthen policing to address banditry kidnapping and other challenges affecting many states.
