Umuahia Nigeria – The Abia State Government has begun the full rollout of the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment system for the Green Shuttle Bus Service, as part of its efforts to modernise public transportation across the state, transportation officials say.
The initiative, driven by the Abia State Ministry of Transportation under Governor Alex Otti’s administration, is designed to provide a seamless and efficient commuting experience for residents, eliminating many of the challenges associated with cash transactions on buses, the government said in a statement released on Sunday March 1, 2026.
In the statement the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the Abia Connect Card – also known as the “Abia State Card” – will allow commuters to pay for shuttle rides using a simple tap on ticketing devices installed in Green Shuttle vehicles. The system is aimed at improving efficiency increasing transparency and reducing revenue losses that often occur with cash handling.
The government said the first Abia Connect Cards are currently being distributed free of charge to residents. Commuters can obtain their cards at designated Green Shuttle terminals and authorised agent locations in cities including Aba and Umuahia by presenting their Abia State Social Security Identification Number (ABSSIN). Those without an ABSSIN can register through the Abia Pay portal before receiving a card.
Once loaded with value by the user or presented at boarding the card is tapped on a reader with a confirmation tone indicating successful payment. The first card issuance remains free though subsequent funding of the card accounts will be subject to a small top-up charge.
Officials described the launch as a major milestone in the government’s digitalisation strategy for public services and urged commuters to adopt the new system to help enhance accountability and reliability in the transport sector.
The rollout comes as part of broader moves by the Abia State Government to leverage technology in improving infrastructure and public services, reflecting its ongoing commitment to innovation efficiency and transparency in governance.
