TETFund To Modernise Engineering Labs In 12 Varsities Nationwide

The Federal Government has approved a ₦48 billion intervention to strengthen engineering and technology faculties across 12 selected universities, allocating ₦4 billion to each institution, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, said on Monday March 2, 2026. The Federal Government has approved a ₦48 billion intervention to strengthen engineering and technology faculties across 12 selected universities, allocating ₦4 billion to each institution, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, said on Monday March 2, 2026.

Alausa made the announcement at the inauguration of the Implementation Committee for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Special High-Impact Intervention Projects in Abuja, where he explained that the funding will support rehabilitation of workshops procurement of modern equipment and construction of new facilities where needed to enhance practical engineering education.

The intervention targets Federal Universities of Technology and conventional universities across the country, reflecting a push to bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry requirements. Beneficiary institutions include Federal University of Technology, Minna; FUT Akure; FUT Owerri; FUT Ikot-Abasi; FUT Babura; Nigerian Army University Biu; African Aviation and Aerospace University; Shehu Shagari University of Education Sokoto; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; and the University of Ilesha, Osun State.

Alausa said the reforms align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, emphasising the importance of skills development in engineering to support national growth and economic diversification. The upgrades are expected to improve laboratories workshops research facilities and equipment that will boost hands-on training for students.

The minister also noted that an additional ₦20 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 TETFund guidelines to further support engineering infrastructure in other institutions beyond the initial list.

Nigeria news.A monitoring committee chaired by key industry and academic leaders has been charged with ensuring that the intervention projects are executed efficiently and transparently, with periodic reports to guide policy decisions and maintain accountability.
