Ibom Air has announced a new travel safety restriction that prohibits passengers from placing power banks in overhead bins or checked-in baggage on its flights, the airline said in a statement on Tuesday March 3, 2026. The directive is in ull compliance with a recent safety order from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) aimed at reducing fire risks from lithium-ion batteries.
Under the updated policy, passengers must carry power banks only in cabin luggage and keep them within easy reach throughout the flight, such as under the seat in front of them or in a seat pocket. The airline explained that power banks remain banned in checked baggage consistent with longstanding safety regulations, and now also may not be stored in overhead storage bays.
Ibom Air said the move aligns with global aviation safety standards and reflects growing concerns over incidents involving lithium-ion battery fires in aircraft. The NCAA directive allows power banks up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) without special approval, while devices between 100 Wh and 160 Wh require clearance from the airline before travel. Power banks rated above 160 Wh are strictly prohibited on all flights, according to NCAA rules.
The airline urged travellers to check the watt-hour rating printed on their devices before arriving at the airport and to ensure all battery-powered gadgets comply with safety requirements. Authorities say this measure will help cabin crew respond quickly if any device overheats or smokes, enhancing overall flight safety.
