The Anambra State Government has warned that any student who fails to attend school on Mondays will face a one-week suspension, officials say.
The warning was issued by Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the State Commissioner for Education, while addressing school management teams at her office in Onitsha, as part of efforts to enforce full school attendance after recent disruptions linked to Monday sit-at-home advocacy.
Chuma-Udeh said the directive was given on the instructions of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and aims to ensure that students return to class every Monday without excuse. She stressed that schools must monitor attendance and comply with the government’s order, warning that non-compliance by students will lead to automatic suspension for one week.
Representatives of schools present acknowledged attendance improvements, but some also noted continued reluctance by some parents to send children to class on Mondays. Officials said they will work closely with parents and school administrators to enforce the rule and support regular attendance.
The Ministry of Education is also conducting exams and school placement activities across the state, with Chuma-Udeh monitoring exercises at several centres in Awka to ensure learning activities proceed uninterrupted.
