Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian military base and an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Ngoshe town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. The assault left an unspecified number of soldiers and civilians dead and triggered panic across the community.
According to security sources and residents, the insurgents stormed the community in a coordinated operation during the night and continued their attack into the early hours of the morning. The militants targeted a military formation in the area before extending the assault to the nearby camp housing displaced residents who had fled earlier violence in the region.
Witnesses said the attackers overpowered troops stationed in the town and opened fire on civilians while many residents fled into nearby bushes for safety. During the raid several homes and structures were reportedly damaged while the terrorists looted property and created widespread fear in the community.
Local sources also reported that several women and children were abducted during the attack though the exact number has not been officially confirmed. Military authorities have not yet released the total casualty figure as security operations continue in the area.
Following the incident troops under Operation Hadin Kai were said to have mobilised reinforcements while air surveillance and pursuit operations were launched to track the fleeing insurgents around the mountainous border region near Cameroon.
The attack highlights the continued threat posed by Boko Haram and its splinter faction ISWAP in parts of northeastern Nigeria despite ongoing counter insurgency operations by Nigerian security forces.
