The Kwara State Government has announced the successful installation of solar energy systems in 13 public hospitals across the state as part of efforts to improve healthcare services and ensure stable electricity supply in medical facilities.
The initiative was carried out through the Kwara State Ministry of Health in collaboration with development partners under a programme designed to strengthen health infrastructure and reduce dependence on unstable public power supply. Officials said the solar installations will help hospitals maintain uninterrupted medical services especially during power outages.
According to the state government the project covers selected general hospitals and primary healthcare centres across several local government areas. The solar systems are expected to power essential medical equipment lighting laboratory services and cold storage facilities used for vaccines and medications.
Health authorities in the state explained that unreliable electricity has long been a major challenge for public hospitals particularly in rural communities. They noted that the introduction of renewable energy will improve emergency response capacity and support better healthcare delivery for patients.
The government also stated that the solar initiative will reduce operational costs previously spent on diesel generators while providing cleaner and more sustainable energy for healthcare facilities. Officials added that the programme forms part of broader reforms aimed at modernising the health sector in Kwara State.
Residents and health workers have welcomed the development saying the improved power supply will strengthen hospital services and help medical staff respond more effectively to patients’ needs.
