Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has convened an urgent high-level meeting with the country’s top military officials at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja. The discussion focuses on the increasing assaults on military facilities, particularly across the North East.
Key attendees at the session include:
•Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede
•Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu
•Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke
•Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass
•Senior officials from the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)
The emergency gathering was prompted by a spate of deadly attacks on military bases in Borno State, which reportedly claimed the lives of at least three Lieutenant-Colonels and numerous soldiers. In addition, hundreds of civilians remain in captivity amid ongoing insecurity in the region.
General Musa stressed the urgent need to reassess and reinforce strategies against insurgent groups. While acknowledging losses sustained by Nigerian forces, he noted that the militants have incurred even heavier casualties in recent confrontations.
This meeting aligns with broader initiatives by the Defence Ministry to improve operational coordination and innovation in counter-terrorism efforts, including the rollout of monthly briefings designed to tackle terrorism, insurgency, and banditry across the nation.
