A heavy‑goods truck overturned on the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway early on Wednesday morning, causing major traffic gridlock for motorists heading both into and out of Lagos. The incident occurred at around 7:00 a.m. on the inward Lagos (Secretariat) axis after the vehicle apparently developed a mechanical fault. Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the truck was carrying two 20‑foot containers when it broke down and subsequently toppled during a private recovery attempt, forcing the containers to fall across most of the roadway.
The overturned truck has blocked a significant portion of the expressway, leaving only a lane open and resulting in heavy congestion that has extended back towards the Kara Bridge area. LASTMA said its Rescue and Recovery Team is on site with a high‑capacity tow truck and a crane to remove the fallen containers and restore free flow of traffic. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes where possible while removal operations continue.
Otedola Bridge is a key transit corridor linking major urban and economic hubs in Lagos and beyond. Accidents on this route often trigger widespread delays because it connects to other busy junctions such as Secretariat, Berger, and Ikeja. Traffic officials confirmed that LASTMA officers are directing movement and assisting stranded commuters as efforts to clear the wreckage proceed.
So far there are no official reports of serious injuries from today’s incident. Emergency services remain on standby to respond should medical attention be needed for any motorists involved. Commuters have been urged to exercise patience and follow traffic directives to avoid further disruptions.
