The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide warning over rising temperatures across Nigeria, cautioning that residents in several states including the Federal Capital Territory and Benue may face increased risk of heat stress and related health complications.

According to the agency, a surge in ambient temperatures combined with high humidity levels is expected to cause significant thermal discomfort across many regions of the country over the coming days. The most affected areas include parts of the North Central region such as Benue and Niger as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

NiMet explained that the weather pattern could lead to temperatures ranging between 36 and 42 degrees Celsius in several parts of Nigeria. Northern cities are expected to record the highest temperatures while southern states may also experience intense heat due to rising humidity levels.

The agency warned that prolonged exposure to such extreme heat could lead to dehydration fatigue irritability reduced concentration and other health risks. Authorities therefore advised Nigerians to take precautionary measures to protect themselves during the period of extreme heat.

Residents were encouraged to drink plenty of water remain in well ventilated environments wear light breathable clothing and avoid outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours especially between midday and early afternoon. NiMet also urged parents and caregivers to pay special attention to vulnerable groups including children the elderly and people with existing health conditions.

Experts say the current heat conditions highlight the need for greater public awareness about climate related health risks as rising temperatures continue to affect many parts of West Africa. Authorities have advised citizens to follow weather updates and safety advisories issued by meteorological agencies.
