The senator representing Sokoto South in the National Assembly, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the African Democratic Congress, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Tambuwal announced his decision in a statement confirming that he had communicated his resignation in writing to his ward chairman before aligning with his new political platform.
The former governor of Sokoto State explained that his departure followed deep reflection and consultations with political associates and supporters. He said ongoing internal challenges and divisions within the PDP made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party.
Tambuwal, who previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015 before becoming governor of Sokoto State, said he believes the ADC provides a stronger political platform to advance democratic governance and national development.
He also stated that several of his political allies and supporters would be joining him in the new party as part of efforts to build a broader coalition ahead of upcoming political contests in the country.
Political observers say the defection could reshape alignments within the opposition ahead of future elections, as more prominent figures explore new political platforms amid internal disputes within major parties.
