The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert advising American citizens in Nigeria’s capital to remain indoors following a planned march by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).
In a notice released by the embassy, officials said the IMN had announced its intention to assemble and carry out marches in Abuja and other cities across Nigeria. The embassy warned that such gatherings could attract large crowds and potentially lead to security concerns.
The advisory strongly recommended that all U.S. citizens remain in their residences during the period of the planned demonstrations. The embassy also urged Americans to avoid protest areas and large gatherings while monitoring local media for updates on the evolving situation.
According to the alert, past demonstrations in Abuja have sometimes resulted in clashes between protesters and security forces. Because of this history, the embassy said it was taking precautionary steps to ensure the safety of its citizens.
The planned march is linked to activities by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria which often organizes demonstrations including those associated with the annual Quds Day events that express solidarity with Palestinians.
Security agencies in the Federal Capital Territory are expected to monitor the demonstrations to maintain order and prevent any breakdown of law and order. The embassy also advised U.S. citizens to keep a low profile stay alert in public places and avoid unnecessary travel during the period of the demonstrations.
