The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to investigate the reported ₦5.9 billion spent on the rebranding of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd).
SERAP made the demand in a statement urging the president to direct appropriate anti corruption agencies to probe the expenditure and ensure transparency in the management of public funds.
According to the organisation, Nigerians deserve a clear explanation on how such a large amount of money was spent on the rebranding exercise. SERAP stressed that public institutions must remain accountable especially when large financial commitments are involved.
The group also called for the recovery of any funds that may have been mismanaged if investigations reveal irregularities. It argued that accountability in the use of public resources is essential to maintaining trust in government institutions.
SERAP further urged the government to publish detailed records of the rebranding project including contracts procurement processes and payments made to contractors.
The organisation noted that transparency in public spending will help strengthen governance and discourage wasteful expenditure in government agencies.
The NNPC rebranding exercise was introduced as part of efforts to reposition the state owned oil company following its transition into a limited liability company under the Petroleum Industry Act.
However the reported cost of the exercise has sparked debate among Nigerians with many calling for clarity on how the funds were utilised.
