World football governing body FIFA has sanctioned the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association of the Democratic Republic of the Congo following disciplinary breaches during their 2026 FIFA World Cup play off encounter.

According to FIFA, Nigeria was penalised over crowd misconduct linked to order and security at the match. The governing body said some spectators threw objects during the game which violates Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. As a result the Nigerian federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs.

The Congolese football federation received a heavier punishment after supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match. FIFA said the act breached Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code which prohibits the use of lasers or electronic devices that can distract players and officials.

Following the ruling FIFA imposed a 5,000 Swiss francs fine on the Congolese football authority.

The disciplinary measures come after a tense play off clash between the two African sides during the qualification race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match also generated controversy after Eric Chelle, head coach of Nigeria’s national team known as the Super Eagles, accused officials from DR Congo of engaging in alleged voodoo practices during the match. The claims were made in frustration after the defeat and sparked debate among football supporters and analysts.

While FIFA’s sanctions focused strictly on supporter misconduct the incident has further highlighted tensions surrounding the encounter and the broader qualification battle.

FIFA stated that disciplinary rules are designed to maintain safety fairness and respect in football stadiums and warned that future violations could attract stronger sanctions.
