The Edo State Government has announced plans to prosecute the parents of students involved in a bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City.
State authorities said the decision followed the circulation of a video on social media showing a student being bullied by some classmates within the school premises. The incident sparked outrage among Nigerians and prompted calls for swift action against those responsible.
Officials said investigations were immediately launched in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to identify all students involved in the act. The government confirmed that both the students and their parents would be held accountable under relevant laws.
According to the state government, the parents of the erring students will be charged to court for failing to properly supervise their children. Authorities stressed that the move is intended to discourage bullying and ensure parents take responsibility for the behaviour of their wards.
Education officials in the state also stated that disciplinary measures have been initiated within the school while counselling support is being arranged for the victim.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting children and maintaining safe learning environments across schools in the state. It warned that acts of bullying violence or intimidation will not be tolerated in any educational institution.
Authorities added that further steps may be introduced to strengthen monitoring and behavioural standards in schools across Edo State.
