Nigeria’s headline inflation rate eased slightly to 15.06 percent in February, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.
The report shows that inflation declined marginally from 15.10 percent recorded in January, continuing a gradual downward trend in consumer prices across the country.
The statistics agency noted that the decline marks another month of slowing inflation, although the drop was minimal. Analysts say the movement suggests that price pressures in the economy may be stabilising after months of volatility.
Despite the overall decline, food prices remain a major concern. The report indicated that food inflation rose to about 12.12 percent in February from 8.89 percent in January, highlighting persistent pressure on household spending.
Economists say rising costs of food items and transportation continue to influence the cost of living in many parts of Nigeria. Food inflation has historically been the largest contributor to the country’s overall inflation rate.
Experts also attributed the gradual easing of inflation to tighter monetary policies earlier implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria as well as relative stability in the foreign exchange market and improvements in food supply.
While the marginal decline may signal slow economic recovery, analysts warn that inflation remains a key challenge affecting purchasing power and living standards across the country.
The government and financial authorities are expected to continue monitoring price trends and implementing policies aimed at stabilising the economy in the coming months.
