The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently introduce a wage award and cost of living allowance for workers as the cost of living continues to rise across the country.
The labour union said Nigerian workers are facing increasing economic pressure due to rising prices of food transportation housing and other essential services. According to the NLC, many workers are struggling to meet their basic needs despite the implementation of the new minimum wage.
Labour leaders explained that the proposed wage award and cost of living allowance would serve as temporary relief measures to help workers cope with the current economic challenges. They noted that inflation and the rising cost of goods have significantly reduced the purchasing power of many Nigerians.
The NLC also urged the government to take broader economic measures aimed at stabilising prices and improving the welfare of workers. The union stressed that protecting workers from economic hardship should remain a top priority for policymakers.
The demand comes amid growing concerns from labour groups about the impact of economic reforms and market conditions on ordinary Nigerians.
The labour organisation said it will continue engaging with the government and relevant stakeholders to ensure that workers receive fair compensation and support during the current economic situation.
