Leading opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson, met with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano, in a move widely viewed as early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The visit, which took place during the Sallah celebrations, brought together key opposition stakeholders and supporters, with discussions reportedly focused on building stronger alliances and exploring strategies for future elections.
Addressing supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Obi emphasised the importance of opposition unity, expressing optimism about the chances of unseating the ruling party in the next election cycle.
He also spoke about plans to revitalise Kano’s economy, highlighting the need to restore industrial activities in areas such as Bompai and Sharada, as well as revive legacy institutions like the former Bank of the North.
Despite the political undertones, Obi maintained that the visit was primarily a goodwill gesture to celebrate the festive season with the people of the state.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Kwankwaso-Obi support group, Abba Sadauki Gwale, openly advocated for a political alliance between the two leaders, describing it as a strategic combination capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
He noted that merging Obi’s strong support base in the South with Kwankwaso’s influence in the North could significantly boost the opposition’s chances in 2027.
The meeting adds to growing signals of coalition-building among opposition leaders as preparations gradually begin for the next general elections.
