At least nine soldiers and one police officer have been reported killed following an ambush by armed gunmen in Kebbi State.
The attack occurred on Tuesday night in the Shanga Local Government Area, specifically around the Giro Masa community, where security operatives were reportedly targeted unexpectedly by the assailants.
According to accounts from residents, the troops had been deployed after receiving intelligence about the presence of suspected criminals at a construction site. However, they were ambushed en route to the location.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as chaotic, with gunmen launching a surprise assault that also led to the destruction of two military vehicles. Earlier reports indicated that civilians may also have been affected during the attack.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the incident and condemned it, describing the killings as tragic and unacceptable.
During a visit to the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, where victims were taken, the governor assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of those injured and support the families of the fallen security personnel.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving security and protecting residents, while also offering prayers for those who lost their lives.
The incident adds to a series of attacks on security forces in northern Nigeria, where armed groups have continued to target both civilians and military personnel.
