Nigeria’s electricity generation is expected to return to previous levels within the next two weeks as gas supply constraints ease, Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power, Adedayo Olowoniyi, has stated. Speaking in an interview on ARISE News, Olowoniyi attributed recent nationwide outages to maintenance on a major gas pipeline, noting that restoration efforts are already underway.
He explained that once full gas pressure is restored, power plants will have sufficient fuel to reach generation levels recorded in the past few weeks. Olowoniyi highlighted that gas accounts for 75% of Nigeria’s power generation, making pipeline maintenance critical for supply stability.
The adviser also said early signs of improvement are visible as gas pressure gradually returns, and assured that continued monitoring will see electricity supply stabilise in the coming weeks. He added that the frequency of grid collapses has reduced under the current administration, with recent disruptions representing temporary setbacks amid broader sectoral progress.
Olowoniyi further addressed structural challenges in the electricity industry, pointing out that consumers currently pay only a fraction of the actual cost of electricity. He noted that the Federal Government has begun settling outstanding liabilities to generation companies through a ₦4 trillion payment plan, with an initial ₦500 billion bond set for disbursement.
Despite ongoing challenges, Olowoniyi expressed confidence that improved gas pressure and ongoing policy interventions will gradually stabilise electricity supply while laying the foundation for long-term reforms.
