Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed strong support for the proposed creation of Anioma State, stating that Asaba would serve as its capital if the plan succeeds. He made this known while addressing party members during the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress held in Asaba, with key political figures from the region in attendance.
Akpabio noted that the administration of Bola Tinubu is committed to the initiative, describing it as part of broader efforts to ensure fairness, promote development, and improve governance. He explained that if Anioma State is created, Warri would become the capital of the remaining Delta State, citing its strong infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, and presence of major oil companies.
He described the agitation for Anioma State as long-standing and justified, emphasizing that it reflects the need for balanced development in the region. According to him, the proposal, championed by Ned Nwoko, has continued to gain traction within the National Assembly, with widespread legislative backing.
Akpabio expressed confidence that the creation of the new state would bring significant socio-economic benefits, including improved administration and decentralisation of governance. He also called for unity among stakeholders in the South-South region and urged continued support for the government’s agenda, noting that such collaboration would strengthen national development and integration.
