Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is divided ahead of its National Convention scheduled for March 29-30. Speaking after inspecting projects in Abuja, Wike said disagreements within the party do not constitute a split, noting that while some members have grievances, these are personal and not indicative of formal factionalism.
Wike emphasised, “We have only one PDP, no faction. Naturally, there are some individuals that may not be happy… but there is no faction. There is only one PDP.” He added that reconciliation efforts by aggrieved members are personal initiatives and the party convention will proceed as planned.
Meanwhile, former Bayelsa State governor and current senator, Seriake Dickson, warned that the PDP risks losing its identity and becoming a clone of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking at the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja, Dickson urged opposition politicians, including PDP and Labour Party members, to consider joining the new party, describing it as a people-oriented alternative.
Dickson said, “I call on loyal members of the PDP who do not want to be part of a party that will become a clone of the APC… What will be left of the PDP will no longer be the party we used to know.” He also criticised governance driven by power and money rather than service to citizens, emphasizing that political power should serve the people.
The comments reflect growing tensions within Nigeria’s major political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
