Christians across the world marked Palm Sunday with colourful processions, church services, and strong calls for peace, as the celebration unfolded against a backdrop of global tensions.

The day, which begins Holy Week, commemorates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where he was welcomed with palm branches symbolising victory and peace.

At the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV used his Mass at St. Peter’s Square to condemn war and violence, urging the faithful to reject the use of religion to justify conflict. He described God as a “king of peace” and criticised leaders who wage war while claiming religious backing, referencing ongoing tensions involving Iran and the war in Ukraine.

In Nigeria, large congregations gathered in cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, holding processions and services marked by palm-waving and hymns. The Christian Association of Nigeria called on leaders to show empathy amid rising economic hardship, emphasising the message of humility and peace demonstrated by Christ.

However, in Jerusalem, celebrations were overshadowed by controversy as Israeli police reportedly blocked top church leaders, including Pierbattista Pizzaballa, from accessing the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to conduct Palm Sunday Mass—an incident described as unprecedented in centuries.

The development drew international reaction, with Emmanuel Macron condemning the action and stressing the need to guarantee freedom of worship for all religions in Jerusalem.

Despite the tensions, the observance worldwide blended celebration with reflection, setting a solemn tone for the Easter season while reinforcing calls for peace, unity, and compassion.
