Medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria have raised strong objections to a proposed health reform bill before the National Assembly, warning that it could disrupt the country’s healthcare system and compromise patient safety.

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria described the bill, Executive Bill HB:2701, as a major setback, arguing that it undermines professional standards and introduces unnecessary changes to the regulation of laboratory practice.

Speaking in Abuja, AMLSN President Casmir Ifeanyi criticised the proposed amendments to the law governing the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, particularly those affecting its leadership and structure.

He said the bill seeks to expand the council’s board to include non-specialists and political appointees, a move he warned could weaken professional independence and reduce the quality of oversight in laboratory services.

Ifeanyi also faulted plans to remove the requirement that the council’s chairman must be a fellow of the profession, noting that such a change could allow individuals without adequate expertise to oversee critical aspects of healthcare.

The association further opposed provisions that would include the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in the council’s governance, insisting that professional bodies should remain independently regulated.

According to AMLSN, the proposed changes could trigger fresh conflicts within the health sector and negatively affect service delivery if implemented
