Nigeria has recorded a significant decline in deaths caused by Tuberculosis, with mortality dropping by 63 percent between 2015 and 2024, according to the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

The Director of Public Health at the FCTA, Dan Gadzama, disclosed this during a World TB Day 2026 community outreach held in Mabushi, Abuja. He noted that the country has also achieved a treatment success rate of 94 percent, highlighting that the disease is both preventable and curable when detected early.

The outreach programme, organised in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme and the Institute of Human Virology of Nigeria, provided residents with free testing, counselling, and treatment services.

Despite the progress, Gadzama warned that tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge, with Nigeria still among countries carrying a high burden of the disease. He, however, pointed to improved case detection and stronger health interventions as key drivers of the progress recorded.

Data from the programme showed that over 467,000 TB cases were reported in 2025—the highest ever—reflecting better detection efforts. In the FCT alone, more than 40,000 people were screened, with thousands of confirmed cases receiving treatment.

Health officials have urged Nigerians to take advantage of free testing services and know their TB status, as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate the disease.
