Delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have begun arriving at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja for the party’s national convention organised by the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee.
Hundreds of delegates, dressed in party-branded uniforms, were seen taking their seats inside the velodrome, while others underwent accreditation and security clearance at designated points. The venue was decorated in the party’s colours, with the iconic umbrella symbol prominently displayed.
According to the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee and former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, a total of 2,503 delegates from across the country are expected to participate in the exercise.
The convention, scheduled to run from Sunday to Monday, is aimed at producing party officials who will steer the PDP’s affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims of any court order stopping the convention. The committee’s spokesperson, Jungudo Mohammed, affirmed that all necessary legal and organisational requirements had been met.
He assured party members of a credible, transparent, and inclusive process, adding that the PDP remains committed to strengthening democracy while keeping the door open for reconciliation despite attempts by some individuals to disrupt the exercise.
