The Yobe State Government has approved the reintroduction of a weight-in allowance for journalists and non-journalists working across media and cultural sectors in the state.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Establishment, Zainab Muhammad Ago, on behalf of the Head of Service, the approval followed a joint request by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU).
The allowance applies to workers in radio, television, and the Council for Arts and Culture. Under the new structure, journalists will receive 35% of their basic salary, while non-journalists will get 20%.
The government noted that both unions previously benefited from the allowance before the implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage.
The Ministry of Finance has been directed to commence payment of the allowance accordingly.
