Arthur Okonkwo has been officially cleared by FIFA to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria.
The approval, recorded on April 6, 2026, confirms that the goalkeeper is now eligible to represent the Nigeria national football team after previously being tied to England at youth level.
Born in Camden to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo featured for England across multiple youth categories, including U-15 to U-18, during his time at Arsenal. However, he never earned a senior cap, making him eligible for the switch under FIFA rules.
The 24-year-old currently plays for Wrexham AFC, where he has become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper since making his move permanent in 2024 after an initial loan spell. His performances in the Championship have drawn attention as a strong option for Nigeria.
Okonkwo had earlier been in contact with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, but administrative delays prevented his inclusion in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His addition is now expected to boost Nigeria’s goalkeeping options alongside Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye, and Francis Uzoho.
