The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has suspended its indefinite nationwide strike and directed members to return to work from Wednesday morning following renewed assurances from the federal government.
NARD President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman said the decision came after the government indicated willingness to address concerns surrounding the controversial Professional Allowance Table (PAT), which had been slated for implementation in April 2026.
He noted that the suspension is conditional, warning that the association has issued a fresh ultimatum to the government, giving it until April 21 to fully meet its demands or risk another industrial action.
The strike was initially triggered by plans to halt the revised allowance structure, which covers call duty, shift allowances, rural incentives, and other entitlements previously agreed upon after the 2025 strike. NARD argued that the move undermined trust and violated existing agreements.
The association is now demanding immediate reversal of the decision, payment of outstanding allowances, settlement of salary and promotion arrears, and completion of the 2026 residency training fund process, stressing that failure to comply will lead to a resumption of the strike.
