The Bauchi State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of activities in 24 cattle markets across four local government areas as part of efforts to curb insecurity and disrupt criminal networks.

Governor Bala Mohammed directed the closure affecting Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi, and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

According to the government, the affected markets had become operational hubs for bandits involved in cattle rustling, kidnapping for ransom, illegal arms circulation, and extortion.

Authorities said the markets were being exploited by criminal elements to steal livestock and destabilise food supply chains in the affected communities.

The state government described the development as a serious threat to economic activity and rural livelihoods, prompting the temporary shutdown.

Security agencies have been directed to enforce full compliance with the order while traditional rulers and local authorities have been instructed to sensitise residents.

The government said the measure is temporary and will remain in place until noticeable improvements in security are achieved across the affected areas.
