A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olabode George, has raised concerns that Nigeria’s democratic system is under threat, accusing the All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission of actions that could weaken the country’s political structure.

George claimed that recent actions and statements from both the ruling party and the electoral body suggest an attempt to sideline opposition forces ahead of the 2027 presidential election, alleging that there is a push to ensure a single candidate emerges without fair competition.

He warned that such developments risk undermining democratic principles, stating that efforts to suppress opposition voices could erode the foundations of Nigeria’s democracy. He likened the situation to a struggle for power driven by self-interest rather than national stability.

The elder statesman called on leaders across political divides to speak out against what he described as dangerous trends, insisting that silence could allow further deterioration of the system. He stressed that Nigeria’s size and diversity require a fair and balanced political environment.

George also pointed to growing insecurity in the country, arguing that attention should be focused on addressing internal challenges rather than political maneuvering. He maintained that those responsible for violence and instability are within the country and should be decisively handled.

He further alleged that the electoral body is no longer acting independently, claiming it is being used to weaken opposition parties, a development he said Nigerians must resist to preserve democratic governance.

Reiterating his stance, George urged citizens and stakeholders to remain vigilant and committed to protecting the nation’s democracy from actions that could compromise its integrity.
